How I breastfed my babies

If you have already read my Breast Crawl post then you will have already guessed that my involvement in their feeding was minimal, other than being the cow.

Babies are born with the skills to feed. Granted they may be a bit sleepy at first but they know what to do.

In the early days of feeding (very early in my case) I would recline slightly either on a bed or sofa. I would place the baby on top of my body so that their head was in front of the boob they would feed from. The rest of their body would lie across the other side of my body. That was as involved as I got. The baby would then spend a couple of seconds sniffing around and putting their head into a position that they liked and then they would latch on by themselves. They would feed and when finished would normally pull off and then lay their head on my boob exhausted and have a nice sleep.

Don’t stress yourself out fixating that they must be at a certain angle and their mouths open a certain amount. From my experience it just isn’t true. In fact my babies fed from every angle imaginable. My daughter’s favourite position when we were in bed was to kind of kneel up. She would have her knees on the bed and her body would drape across mine with a hand on either side of my boob. Neither of my babies took as much of the nipple into their mouths as ‘recommended.’

After a few feeds they were away. By day three I was able to walk around holding my baby in one arm whilst they fed which enabled me to get on with whatever it was that I wanted to do. I found this an invaluable skill on a growth spurt day.
