Knowing how beneficial song is in developing a baby’s language, communication, spatial awareness, rhythm and later on academic achievement I have always been a big singer. Not that I can, I sound like a cat being strangled!
Singing is a great way to get children to do things as well. Why do you think teachers sing tidy up songs?
We sing all of the time in my house. We sing about tidying up, putting on the washing, getting dressed, brushing our teeth and going to the shops. We sing real songs but we make up a lot of songs too. Just in the spur of the moment we sing about what we are doing.
I’m sure all of this singing has really benefited my children as they have very good emotional intelligence, excellent memory skills and vocabulary.
However, I am starting to get slightly concerned that they are living in a real life musical and think that this is ‘normal’ behaviour.
I had a day dream the other day where my son was in Tesco’s singing at the cashier as they carried out the transaction. The cashier gave him a very strained tense smile.
Hmmm.
Oh well, we are all happy at the moment and other than hurting our neighbour’s ears in the summer months when all of the windows are open, we aren’t causing anyone any harm. I guess I will just wait and see what happens. Is it really that bad to live in a musical?
